Prenups sometimes have a bit of a bad reputation due to the misconception that getting one makes it seem as though a person is going into a marriage expecting it to fail. However, more and more people have come to realize that it is a good financial tool that everyone should take advantage of in order to protect their assets, no matter what stage of life they are in. Defining prenuptial agreements Smart Asset discusses the importance of prenuptial agreements in couples of all sorts. Young couples could benefit from it because they have to worry about college education and child support. Older couples might need it to protect business assets and heirs. First, what exactly is a prenup? This is short for a prenuptial agreement, which essentially serves as a way to divide assets before a divorce is necessary. It is a blueprint that allows you to split up everything in accordance with the prenup in the event that a split does happen, thus eliminating any fighting and friction that might otherwise happen. What are they for? It is a good way to protect assets and personal property, as a person can define exactly what they get to keep and what gets divided when they write a prenup together. It also allows for both people to create a fair and equal division without the muddled emotions that often come along with divorce, which makes it hard for people to stay neutral and unbiased. Of course, it is still important to have proper guidance when writing prenup agreements so as to ensure that they are enforceable should the time come to use them. The post What are prenups good for? first appeared on Leslie L.
